Wind Mobile & Public Mobile: iPhone & Blackberry

Submitted by Voip-Cell-Admin on Fri, 10/30/2009 - 02:39

Will Wind Mobile have the iPhone?

In it's current state, the iPhone (including the iPhone 3GS) will not work on the Wind Mobile network, so Wind won't have the iPhone in Canada. This isn't a matter of Wind refusing to pay Apple enough money, the iPhone just simply won't function on the WIND network. That's not to say that Apple won't come out with a version that could work on the Wind Mobile network in the future (I think they will), but for now, no iPhone on Wind. Most existing phones on the market will be incapable of working on WIND.

When will WIND Launch anyway?

Will Wind Mobile support the Blackberry?

Yes and no. Wind will support the new Blackberry Onyx (Blackberry Bold 9700), but not older Blackberries. Again, this is because of technical limitations, not a jerk decision by Wind. It is NOT simply a matter of upgrading firmwares to get the Blackberry to support the system that Wind will work over, different hardware is actually required.

Will Public Mobile have the iPhone or Blackberry?

Public Mobile is marketing itself as a value unlimited talk&text provider. Supposedly, they don't plan on offering any data plans at all. Seriously. Their network will have limited bandwidth, but still, I'm surprised to hear they won't offer any data at all. They should fix this, even slow bandwidth would be amazing, most people just search use mobile data for maps, phone numbers, facebook and reading news. If people can't browse Youtube or stream audio on their phone, they'll manage, especially if you get phones with integrated 802.11b.

Anyways, even moreso than Wind Mobile Canada, Public Mobile's system will be incompatible with the iPhone and all Blackberries. In fact, any phone for Public Mobile will actually have to be custom made for Public Mobile. That's not to say that a company like RIM would never make a Public Mobile version of the Blackberry, but for now, there's no such published plan in the works.

Public Mobile will probably contract with a big cell phone manufacturer like Sony Ericsson or Nokia to custom build a line of value phones that will work on its network. So you won't be able to bring your old phone to Public Mobile, nor buy a phone off Ebay or the like for Public Mobile.

It's just ridiculous that you have to use one of their phones.
They are launching data plans this month or next, and we have to use their phones.

I want my own, unlocked phone that I can do whatever I want with on any carrier I want. I got myself an unlocked HTC with android last year and so far have used it wherever I felt like. I don't particularly care about hardware limitations, as the consumer, I just want it to work my way without any headaches. They are the only half decent provider in the montreal area. Having a mobile device in quebec has become pretty much pointless.
